CONFIRMATION SERVICE
IMPORTANT CONFIRMATION SERVICE NOTE: Confirmation students are expected to attend the 10:30 am mass each Sunday when there is class, to satisfy part of their confirmation service requirement. They will sit with and assist the second grade students during the mass by helping them to follow the readings and the hymns. We understand that your child may have to attend mass at another time periodically, but please, make that the exception rather than a regular occurrence. Thanks.

Food donation collection
Saturday 2/9/19 - On a cold winter day, American Martyrs 8th grade confirmation class stepped up in a big way, by helping with the Knights of Columbus food collection at the Keyfood store at 73 ave and Bell Blvd. With their assistance, we collected 111 bags of food and $230 in donations. Some of the food stays in the St Vincent DePaul food pantry at American Martyrs; the majority goes to the pantry at Our Lady Of Lourdes, which is an official New York City food pantry. THANK YOU CONFIRMATION CLASS!

<<< Friday 11/9/18 - In our usual classroom, started at 630pm with pizza. Then Kaitlyn, Eileen and Julia assisted with making ornaments for our annual church Christmas giving trees. The handmade paper ornaments contain the names of gift recipients - retired nuns, children from less than fortunate situations, and also this year women from a group home. These recipients benefit from the generosity of our parishioners, who for years have been taking the ornaments from the giving tree and buying gifts to brighten the lives of the recipients each Christmas. The gifts get delivered by other parishioners to complete the effort. Thank you Kaitlyn, Eileen and Julia for a job well done.

Sunday 12/10/17 Sorting the "Giving Tree" gifts
Some weeks ago students were able to help make ornaments that were used on the 'giving tree' . Help was needed again at the end of this process, as we sorted gifts generously donated by parishioners in preparation for delivery. Some gifts were delivered to less fortunate children and some to retired nuns.

"The Giving Tree" ornaments -
Thankfully, most of our our 8th grade class was able to attend a special Friday night class where we made ornaments for the parish 'giving tree' - Miguel, Brandon, Joseph, Angelo, Jack, Angel, Dillon . Alyssa was also there, but not for the picture. Sorry Alyssa! The handmade paper ornaments contain the names of the gift recipients - retired nuns and children from less than fortunate situations. These recipients benefit from the generosity of our parishioners, who for years have been taking the ornaments from the giving tree and buying gifts to brighten the lives of the recipients each Christmas. The gifts get delivered by other parishioners to complete the effort. The students exhibited great teamwork in getting the job done. Thanks also go to Anne, Mary, Cindy, Jovie, Gloria and Mrs. Asche , who led the way.

Oktoberfest - thanks go to Dillon G (and to Karen DeRose and the OLSAM youth group) for helping with the party setup. Moving and dressing up tables and handling other decorations set the stage for a great party. Many thanks as well go to Angelo G. and his dad who attended the party. Angelo did a great job handling the sale of raffle tickets, which helped us raise funds for charitable causes.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday 10/21 - Greenway Clean way - the bi annual Knights of Columbus sponsored clean up of the bicycle path - Vanderbilt Motor Parkway took place with the help of Joseph G (and his family). We started at approx. 9am at the 209th street dead end and worked in that area, picking up garbage . Many of the users of the path expressed their appreciation of our efforts as they jogged or biked by.

Sunday 10/15/17 American Martyrs Feast day celebration
The day started as a classroom day for 8th graders, where they shared the classroom with our 8th grade trainees - the 7th graders - for a brief lesson. We then headed over to church. Some of the 8th graders were able to help with our annual ceremony presenting information on the North American Martyrs, after whom our church is named. Alyssa, Joseph, Sarah and Angel all did a terrific job reading biographies of the North American Martyrs, as our second graders processed around the church with pictures of each martyr. Alyssa did the bulk of the reading because in her words, she loves "to hear herself talk" ! Thanks to Emma, who helped us to manage the second graders , who also did a terrific job in handling their responsibilities. We are very proud of all of our students, including former students who are now second grade volunteers for the religious ed program - Theresa Brown and Emily Ledesma, who also helped to keep things organized during the presentation. After mass Angel, Emma and Jack did a great job helping again, to serve bagels and refreshments in the Sullivan Center. Thank you all.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday 10/1/17 - Columbiettes Bake Sale - Donated items were sold after all of the masses. Thanks go to Emma and family who donated some goods and thanks to Angel, who did a spectacular job assisting for multiple hours (luckily he did not eat all of the food!) Great job by Emma, Angel, the Columbiettes and the parishioners who supported the effort by making a purchase . All proceeds will be used to help the needy.
Sunday 9/24/17 - Welcome back bagel breakfast. Some of our 8th grade Confirmation candidates performed their first community service work when they assisted at the Welcome back bagel breakfast. Some of them arrived early to assist with set up. They all helped serve and clean up. They did a great job in helping to ensure that our parishioners enjoyed themselves and they didn't eat all of the food! . They are off to a great start. See picture below ....

The American Martyrs Confirmation class of April 2017 !
Breakfast with Santa is an annual Catholic War Veterans event. Set up was on Friday 12/9/16 and the event was on Saturday 12/10/16. Students helped with set up, with face painting, helped Santa hand out presents, and assisted with other miscellaneous tasks. Our Catholic war veterans needed our help with their wonderful family event and our Confirmation class students did another great job.

Knights of Columbus food collection: Another service opportunity occurred on Saturday 11/19/16. The Knights collected food donations from shoppers at Fairway Market, located at the Douglaston Shopping Center. Some eighth graders were there to help, by accepting food donations and placing them in shopping carts (and collecting cash donations as well). We collected 51 bags of food and $400 in cash, thanks to the generous shoppers and work of our volunteers. The donations were brought to the American Martyrs food pantry and the Our Lady of Lourdes food pantry, which happens to be an official New York City food distribution pantry. Thank you again, eighth graders.
Pasta Night - the 8th grade class continues to shine as they fulfill their confirmation service requirement. On Friday 11/11/16, a number of them attended the event set up and did a great job helping out. Then on the night of the event, 19 students attended and helped to make Pasta Night a wonderful event. The students were invaluable in providing assistance. They also enjoyed some of the food and had the chance to play a round of musical chairs and dance some "Cotton Eyed Joe". Thank you students! Know that the party co - hosts, the Knights of Columbus and the Columbiettes, are donating a portion of the party proceeds to our Catholic War Veterans Post at American Martyrs.
Regarding Halloween:Apologies for any confusion and inconvenience with the Halloween Party set up, but thank you to those who were able to help with the set up and the party. The students did a wonderful job.
